Touched on a lot of important political topics while also not forgetting it was a romance. If you read A Princess in Theory, Likotsi is Prince Thabiso's advisor, a masculine presenting queer woman. You saw hints of what happened but since she was a secondary character, it was unclear why things didn't work out. This book fills that gap.Using flashbacks flawlessly, the story details meeting Fabiola, a Haitian-American queer woman and how she changed her world. Their cultural differences were so charmingðŸ˜I don't think I've read a f/f book that featured two Black women with this dynamic and didn't realize how much I needed it! And they were both dark skinned! I don't even think I deserved this to be one of my first official reads of the year.My only complaint is it's a novella so it's about a quarter size of the other books. For a cover this banging, it deserved a full length. I bought it via audio as soon as I saw it available. Don't say you want to see inclusion in queer romance and not read this book!
I wanted to like this so much because a) Likotsi is my favorite character in this series, 2) black lesbian romance *heart eyes*, c) that cover! Buuuuut it was over-written and lacked the heart & humor of the other books. Likotsi and Fabiola felt wooden and 2D to me, even though their attraction felt very real. It might be that novellas are not for me, so definitely give this a shot if you like Cole.(highly recommend reading A Princess in Theory first.)
Once Ghosted, Twice Shy is the novella we've all been waiting for, following my beloved Likotsi. Listen, especially after re-reading A Princess in Theory, my love of Likotsi was at a height I didn't think it could top. She's so matter of fact and straight forward with Thabiso and I just adore her. In Once Ghosted, Twice Shy, Likotsi takes center stage and it's fascinating to watch her and Fab fall in love and figure things out. This is a second chance romance because Fab and Likotsi originally meet during the events of A Princess in Theory, but then Fab ghosts Likotsi and months later they wind up on the same subway that gets stuck. I really loved this novella, even though, as usual, I could have gone for a little more. But, in my defense, am I ever not going to want more of Alyssa Cole's writing? Also, if you didn't know, the cover models are dating IRL and isn't that just the most perfect thing ever??
As a Haitian-American married to a woman, I never expected to see myself so fully represented in a traditionally published romance novel. The author does an exceptional job of melding romance, heartbreak, immigration issues, and the angst of the twenty-something years into one superbly written novella. I particularly loved the little touches that exposed us to Fabiola’s Haitian culture (every Haitian knows Tabou Combo. Look it up!) and the strength of her family bond. I could feel Nkotsi’s pain and fear, but also the love that had her reaching out to the woman who broke her heart. I was so happy when they got back together, but I wanted the story to go on forever!
I knew going in this was going to be short, sweet, and to the point so insta-love was to be expected. But this novella did a lot packing in when Likotsi and Fab met, their 2nd chance encounter, some of the best dates I've read, and the reveal of what broke them apart. Likotsi remains my favorite character from this series and I would have enjoyed a longer book for her but at least we get a physical copy as well because I want this for my set. I adore this cover, the models are perfect! It, alone, made me give this a bonus star for this highly anticipated novella
I absolutely am in love with the Reluctant Royals series. Each book in the series has brought its own loveliness to the world Alyssa Cole is creating. Once Ghosted, Twice Shy will always remain in my heart because it is the first time I'm reading a romance novella with lesbian characters that didn't read as if they were straight out of some gross porn. And for that I will always have a special place in my heart for it. Representation matters. Thank you.
There is so much to love about this story! Likotsi and Fab were both great characters and complemented each other perfectly. The structure of the story, toggling between the present and the past, worked really well. I especially liked the grown-up flirting, and the emotional scenes got me. I’ve read a couple of other books by this author, and one of my favorite things about her is her eloquent prose style. It was just a real pleasure to read.
Tension, passion, humor, and a bit of fluff - Once Ghosted, Twice Shy has it all. This second chance novella was everything I wanted and more. Cole never fails to amaze me with the life she breathes into the little details of her characters.CW: deportation
