Review
Karin Maag, H. Henry Meeter Center for Calvin Studies, Calvin College and Seminary "This sparkling translation of John Calvin's 1541 French Institutes offers modern-day readers in the English-speaking world the opportunity to read Calvin's first version of his masterwork intended for a general audience. Elsie McKee is to be commended for her faithful yet accessible translation of this key text."Henri Blocher, Faculté Libre de Theologie Evangélique, Wheaton College Graduate School "A major event for Calvin students! English-language readers can, at last, access and use the 1541 version of the Institutes. Scholars of repute consider this version the most admirable of all: it combines freshness and maturity, it is not overloaded with polemical developments, and, as the first theological work in the vernacular, it made a decisive contribution toward shaping modern French. It is a landmark in Calvin's corpus. Elsie McKee's translation, checked against the original French, remains scrupulously accurate, while it reads with ease and harmonious fluidity."Herman J. Selderhuis, Theologische Universiteit Appeldoorn "I am impressed with what Elsie McKee has accomplished. It is amazing how she has managed to translate Calvin's smooth French into an English that is a pleasure to read. Even more important, however, is that she has made this important work of Calvin accessible for a wide audience, so all can experience the stimulus that reading Calvin can give to the church and theology today."I. John Hesselink, Western Theological Seminary "The 1541 edition of the Institutes has long been considered a gem among the various editions of Calvin's classic. Its special virtues are that it is more concise than the final 1559 edition and also more pastoral and practical, reflecting Calvin's years in the ministry. Finally we have a superb English translation of this edition by a premier Calvin scholar. Elsie McKee knows Calvin and knows French. The result is a wonderful contribution to Calvin studies in the English-speaking world. Readers of this version will gain fresh perspectives and new insights into the Reformer's theology."J. I. Packer, Regent College "Any who wish to encounter Calvin's systematic theology at its most pastoral, freest from controversial preoccupations, and mediated through superlative translation, should devour this rendering of the Reformer's own French version of the second edition of his Institutes. This volume should win Calvin many new friends."

I am currently reading this for a historical readings in theology class at my university. This is definitely an interesting read, and you have to keep in mind historical context for some of the passages, such as the state of the Catholic Church in the 16th century when he goes on and on about the 7th commandment and how eunuchs are great, but priests and nuns are an abomination. It is a fascinating read, even if he gets long winded at times.Pros:If you are at all interested in Augustinian interpretations of theological documents, Calvin's take is something that you will enjoy. It is hard to get into at first, but once you get used to Calvin's style of writing, it flows really well.Cons:Elsie McKees's translation of this specific edition of Calvin in the original french is a bit off at times, but only in small almost unnoticeable ways, such as capitalizing the 'h' when referring to God as 'he', which is something that Calvin did not do. This is trivial, but if you need accuracy when writing for a class, it is something to keep in mind.In terms of quality, this edition has an issue with cheap binding glue, which is why I am taking a star off. Every person in my class has had an issue with the binding breaking and pages (or even whole sections) coming loose by page 300. For the price of this book, that should really not be happening.
Calvin's Institutes is overflowing with godly, biblical insight in terms of both good ol' theology (how to think correctly about God as well as ourselves, salvation, church, covenant, the sacraments, etc.) as well as how to rightly understand scripture. And being written by an experienced pastor, piety & Christian living is also an important aspect of this book. What's so exciting about this particular edition is that Calvin oriented it specifically towards the average person leaving out the heavier polemics of other editions. In other words, this 1541 edition opens up Calvin's greatest work to people who otherwise might not work their way thru the denser 1559 edition. Take up and read, you'll be blessed!
Even if you are only familiar with Reformation history and it's basic timeline please read French Edition Calvin's Institutes of the Christian Religion. This is the first English translation from 1541 French text by renown scholar Archibald Alexander Professor of Reformation Studies and the History of Worship at Princeton Theological Seminary , Elsie Anne McKee. Whether or not you are studying for a degree or just researching what the faith in Christ is founded upon, this monumental work should be on your required reading list. Mckee's ability to transform this antiquarian treatise of Christian doctrine into fluid English without betraying the essence of the work is astounding. Highly recommended !
A must read --history-doctrine-truth! In our day-as John Calvin's day--doctrine & truth are not sought after as they should be--read and become informed!
Best version of the Institutes. I read the 1559 Battles version. But I often got bogged down, slogging along with Calvin as he refuted all his opponents. This 1541 version, by contrast, I found to be fresh and powerful. It was long enough to feel like a complete presentation of Calvin's thought, but not too long to become tedious and obscure. If you are looking for a presentation of Calvin midway between the 1537 Instruction In Faith and the 1559 final version of the Institutes, this is the best choice I have found. McKee's translation is excellent. I recommend this version highly.
Dr. McKee turns reading Calvin into devotional reading. Love it!
Love John Calvin's works!
