The content of this book is quite good.The cause for this review has to do with the print quality of the text itself. This appears to be a "print-on-demand" text. The cover, binding, and paper are all excellent. However, the printing is inconsistent. Some pages are not well inked. Having worked in reprographics, I'd say the bad pages look like about a 60% to 70% halftone screen. This makes the text difficult to read. A colleague also purchased a copy of this text; his copy has the same problem, so this is not a one-shot anomaly.Furthermore, every figure in the entire book appears to be computer-rendered with very poor quality - pixellation is painfully evident and made much worse by the weak inking. Where straight lines are drawn in figures, every single one is pixellated with that painful stairstep fuzz on the edges. The publisher should consider migrating to vector graphics or dramatically improve their rasterized imaging process.For a Wiley book, this is distressing. At nearly a hundred dollars for a name-brand press book, I would like to see traditional quality. This is the third book of this type I have purchased from Amazon (i.e. apparently printed on demand with poor inking). My advice is not to necessarily avoid this text, just be warned and be prepared to send it back if you get a bad copy.
I have the book by Vanghi [The CDMA2000 System for Mobile Communication] as well. The fundamental advantage of this book [cdma2000 Evolution] over Vanghi's, is the evolutionary aspect discussed in here, which make understanding the cdma2000 system very easy.There are a few things lacking (apart for the occasional printing mistakes) like:a. Detailed Message Sequence Charts for call processing scenarios. [Vanghi's book covers that better]b. I found a lack of description of messages across the various interfaces within a cdma2000 network (like A1, A3, A5 ....) interfaces. Being a UMTS Radio Network Systems Engineer for 5 years I would have loved to see these and compare with the same ones in UMTS. Such comparitive study, I beleive, is the best way for a telecommunication person to understand the internals of a telecommunication system.c. Most diagrams seemed to be a copy-paste of the ones in 3GPP2 technical specifications.Overall, I am pretty satisfied with a reading of this one, and would recommend everyone (novice / professional) to read this one before they read Vanghi's book.
I found this book to be very effective in presenting the key concepts and linking them to specfic implementations in cdma2000 standards. The text is concise and to the point and chapters are organized logically and consistent with technology evolution.Also this is the only book I found that extensively talks about EV-DV (Release D) and EV-DO Rev.0/A. The last chapters on link budget and network dimensioining is also very intresting and helpful from practical network design considerations.Althrough I am using this book as a reference at work, I know that some universities have also adopted this book as a reference or text books for CDMA/3G courses.
This is a must have book for any Telecom Professional. The concepts explained by Dr Etemad will help any budding professional to understand the fundamentals of wireless technologies, especially CDMA networks which is employed in next generation networks such as 802.16m and LTE.
I found this to be a pretty good book with a pretty good level of detail dealing with CDMA2000 and EVDO.Something that was a little confusing is that is deals with EVDV that is a technology that is not supposed to be develop by qualcomm anymore... But for me it was an excelent adquisition!
