Fans of Mitford, Karon's delightful fictional village in western North Carolina, will be thrilled with this newest installment, which relates an episode she skipped over in her earlier books: Father Tim and Cynthia's wedding. (He proposed at the end of the second Mitford book, and at the beginning of the third, they were already happily married.) Finally, readers get to see the stunned expressions of most Mitford residents when they hear Father Tim has actually popped the question. Readers learn about Cynthia's anxieties over the pending nuptials, share Esther Bolick's delight when Cynthia asks her to bake her famous orange marmalade cake and hum along as the Lord's Chapel parish belts out "Praise my soul the King of Heaven" at the ceremony. And as usual, Karon works in a few snippets of convincing mountain dialect. While Mitford die-hards will welcome this installment, however, the unconverted won't find much to bring them around; one has to already know Karon's eccentric characters, with all their foibles, to fully appreciate the book. Even Mitford devotees may be a touch disappointed that the trademark lessons about Christian faith that Karon weaves so seamlessly into most of her tales are more or less absent from this slim volume. (When they do appear, they stick out, as when Bishop Cullen pointedly discusses the role of sex in Christian marriage.) Still, don't be surprised if Mitford fans begin serving orange marmalade cake at their weddings, and sing hymn 410 at every opportunity. This little novel describes how Father Tim and Cynthia love each other with their whole hearts and souls. A beautiful rendition of the changes that happen with the newness of marriage, the knowing that comes with a full and public commitment to one's partner in life. Reading this novel will help you appreciate your own love for your spouse!
When we first received our copy of this book, we had two thoughts. (1) Hadn't we already read about the wedding? (2) The book is somewhat large for so little text. After confirming that we had not read the wedding story in one of Karon's earlier volumes, we settled down to read her most recent offering.We were not disappointed. The story that unfolds in "A Common Life" is anything but common, to use the vernacular. The author graces us with her vision of what a Christian marriage should be like, and dishes out an uncommon amount of good advice for how a couple should get started in building a successful married life. (Of course, the "common" in the title is actually referring to two people who share one life in a solid marriage.)On the other hand, we would have preferred if the book had been considerably smaller in size. Since we purchased it sight unseen, we cannot complain that its moderately large physical size was misleading. To those who pick it up off a shelf in a store without looking inside, however, there is almost certain to be disappointment. A small volume ("marriage missal" size) that one could carry in one's pocket would have been more agreeable. I hope, however, that this does not keep anyone from buying the book. It is well worth the price!
Jan Karon is in a league all her own. She has created a community ( Mitford) of characters including Fr. Tim and Cynthia who readers are drawn to, over and over. The crasser things seem, stories like A Common Life restore one’s perspective. It is part of Jan Karon’s Mitford series books. Jay you enjoy it as much as I did.
If you have read the Mitford series and LOVE Father Tim and the Mitford characters, this description of the wedding of Father Tim and Cynthia is a must read. It fills in the blanks with the details of the time surrounding the wedding and gives before un-heard perspectives from many of the beloved townsfolk. You'll have your "AHHHHHHH" moments and your "Oh my goodness, not again!" moments!! At least you'll know from the earlier books that they DO get married, so you'll survive the drama that unfolds as only Jan Karon can present these two lovable characters. If you haven't read "At Home in Mitford" and the 2 companion books, you need to read those before you tackle this one. It would fit nicely after the book where they talk about them being married. Enjoy!
Good read, as all of Karon’s books are. Moves a little slow at times, but love the characters Karon describes, like real people with all of he good and the bad. I recognize a lot of myself in them, as well as people I know around my small town in the southern Appalachians .
Love the Mitford series and was thrilled the wedding of Father Tim to Cynthia was brought to life in "A Common Life..." All the personal glimpses into the various lives of Mitford citizens a delight. Short in length but long in rich and rewarding text. Don't miss this story.
I have loved every one of the Father Tim books in the Mitford series. Jan Karon has created a world I'd love to live in.Her books are fiction at its finest. The best books ever to read before falling asleep. A beautiful world that's not necessarily perfect, but lovely just the same.Her characters are delightful, the plots are sound and develop at the perfect pace. She gives encouragement and teaches spiritual lessons without being preachy.I thoroughly enjoyed the Wedding Story. Every page was precious. And the description of the honeymoon was perfect.
