About the Author
Austin Bay is a retired colonel in the U.S. Army Reserve and author of Embrace the Suck. He has written extensively on current military affairs, and has appeared on NPR’s Morning Edition, Fox News, C-SPAN, MSNBC, CNBC, and Nightline. Bay writes a weekly international affairs column for Creators Syndicate and is a contributing editor at StrategyPage.com. He has written for The Wall Street Journal, The Weekly Standard, the New York Observer, and other publications. Bay served most recently with Headquarters, Multi-National Corps in Iraq in 2004. He was on active duty during Operation Desert Storm and served in Germany in the 1970s. A graduate of Rice University, he has a PhD from Columbia University. He lives in Austin, Texas.

Austin Bay’s Cocktails From Hell is a chillingly and horrifyingly beautiful book that gives a powerful education on the present condition of the world. He rivets our attention to details of wars that could rapidly escalate to global. The author’s goal is to keep our minds clearly focused on what is actually happening amidst the distracting propaganda and diversionary tactics of those who want to fool us. He is teaching us to break down the large confusing mess of war into individual categories of reality that interact with one another. He teaches us to anticipate the possibilities ahead so we can act in a constructively thoughtful manner when facing dangerously volatile situations.As I scan the internet for the definitions of “false flag operations,†“littoral,†“kinetic warfare,†and “non-kinetic warfare,†I see that Col. Bay has no intention of spoon-feeding laymen, but he rather allows us to increase our vocabulary on our own. However, he lays out concepts very clearly. This compact little book is short because its vast amount of information is tightly packed---no wasted words. The author respects his reader’s time and intelligence. Bay’s art is in separating out an individual factor in a conflict to be examined for itself alone. Then he reveals how the multiple factors can and do interact.
Investing about two hours on "Cocktails from Hell" is time well spent. With a jigger of humor, Austin Bay provides keen analysis of five potential flashpoints: North Korea, China, Russia, Yemen and Congo. Bay thoughtfully walks the reader through the goals and perceived risks of the key actors in these flashpoints. You will gain insight into the knowns, unknowns and wildcards, concretized by Bay's observations on how each actor may behave based on their strategic thinking, historic behavior, and allocation of military, economic and cultural resources. I hope that those shaping US foreign policy read this book carefully; with strength and a better understanding of potential adversaries, America can focus on enhancing our productive economy and competent military in ways that reduce the risk of "exogenous events".
